Building an audience on the internet in 2023 is hard.

Harder than it was last year and the year before that. But this is the best time for you to build an audience because it will get harder as time goes on.

But you are going to fail, except you have a winning plan.

That is what this article is about. Here are 6 rules for building an audience in 2023.

Figure out why you need an audience.

An audience is important, but why is it important to you? You need to figure out why you need an audience. There are two major reasons for building an audience.

  • To leverage your audience-building skills to get a seat at the table.
  • To sell to your audience.

Once you decide why you need an audience, you can skip to the next part.

Figure out what you want to talk about

Your decision from the first question will inform what you want to talk about. Ideally, it should be a topic you are very comfortable speaking about. But even at that. But it should not be just any of your random interests.

While this could work, it will take years and strong resilience to prevent you from giving up. If you want to build an audience, then picking a popular topic in the following niches will guarantee better odds of success.

Entrepreneurship (marketing, operations, product development)

Finance (investing, personal finance)

Physical well-being ( exercise, food, sex)

While there are many other niches, and within these niches, you can still go another level deeper.

Choose a profitable platform.

Now the rubber meets the road. You can now start creating content. But before you start, pick a profitable platform. There are 5 profitable platforms.

Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp)

Twitter

YouTube

Medium

LinkedIn

There are other platforms like Quora, Reddit, and even Pinterest. But I don’t know how profitable there are, and I don’t also know about them as much as I know about these 5.

One thing you shouldn’t do is to try to be active everywhere at once. A well-optimised account is better than several mediocre profiles on several platforms.

However, you can go ahead to claim your name on several platforms to have a uniform brand when you start going multi-platform in the future.

Talk once, listen twice.

While you need to create a lot of content to start driving interest, you need to talk once and listen twice.

First, you can talk about what you know, but listen to what drives engagement on the platform. Every platform has a native language. And, some topics do better than others. So you need to tailor your content to suit what is already working.

You may be tempted to just focus on creating consistently, but that is not enough. Rather be consistent at creating what people are already consuming.

Double down on what works.

The stage of figuring out what works is continuous. So you need to keep listening, even after your initial success, and double down on what is working. Having a beginner mentality is important to keep growing. Keep listening to your audience and creating more of what they want to hear.

Go multi-platform

From what you’ve learned from one platform, diversify your audience by going on other platforms. If you started on Medium, you could head to Twitter, LinkedIn, or Facebook. You can also start transforming your written content into YT videos. This hedges against the bet of losing your audience if your primary platform goes under.

Conclusion

To win the game of audience building in 2023, you must play by the rules of the game. Obey these 6 rules and you will navigate the tough time of building an audience to get to your 1000 true fans on any platform.
